To Turn Your House Into A Home. 10 Tips.

Have you ever walked into a house that felt cold and impersonal like the person living there just bought furniture and stuck it in there but somehow it just didn't feel like a home? Well this is a very common home decor issue. Weather you are just moving into a new space or have lived in your home for quite a while you may find that your home is missing that personal touch. Keep reading to find out how you can easily achieve a more sentimental feeling in your home.

1. Have a signature color. (and no- Beige is not your signature color) Pick an accent color that is seen in every room of the home. This will make your home feel uniquely yours. 2. Add layers of warmth. Buy cozy throw blankets for seating areas, a fire place or candles, extra pillows on all beds, more fabrics in general (curtains rugs, etc.) This softens the look of the home, making everyone more comfortable. 3. Display memories. Hang family photos but think beyond just photos, hang art from travels, set out gifts from loved ones. Add in some accessories that have personal stories behind them. 4.Fill negative space (tastefully). Vast empty walls feel undecorated and impersonal. 5.Incorporate things that are alive. A plant, a fish tank, a puppy. 6.Give your home a signature smell. You and your guests will come to expect a familiar pleasant smell. 7. Add a non-formal living space where people are allowed to kick their feet up and be a little messy. Formal living rooms should only exist if you have a secondary family room, den, TV room or place where people can relax. 8.Splurge on toiletries. You are in the shower every day. Give your self permission to splurge on a luxurious body wash that will make your bathroom smell good every day. Use a hand soap in a pretty pump, not the container it came in. Always have more towels than you need. 9. Don't neglect the kitchen, kitchens can feel cold and utilitarian. Try adding a pretty fruit bowl, some shades to the window, also stock your pantry and cupboards for a more homey feeling. 10. A cool command center. This is kind of the "brain" of the home. It serves to coordinate schedules, post homework, events, activities, delegate chores, display art, hold keys and backpacks etc.

Remember, the key to all of this is to customize your home to function in a way that makes your life more efficient and also, to personalize your home in a way that makes you feel a general sense of happiness and familiarity each time you walk through your door.
